Most of the energy trapped by the producers is lost as heat as it travels up in different trophic levels in a food chain.

    Explanation:

The light energy trapped by the producers in the form of organic molecules is less than the total light energy available in the surrounding and this energy further decreases as it travels up in different trophic levels when one organisms consumes another organism either plant or animal of other or same trophic level.

The energy is transferred from one trophic level to another in a food web from sun to the producers (or autotrophs), from producers to primary consumers (or herbivores), and from primary consumers to secondary consumers and tertiary consumers (or omnivores or carnivores).
