A solution of an enzyme and a substrate was placed in a water bath and the temperature of the reaction was raised gradually. The graph shown was plotted at the end of the experiment. What can be concluded from the graph? A) Temperature has no effect on the activity of the enzyme. B) The effect of temperature on the enzyme is unpredictable. C) The enzyme shows increased activity up to a certain temperature. D) The activity of the enzyme is inversely proportional to the temperature.

Answer: C) The enzyme shows increased activity up to a certain temperature.

    Explanation:

The kinetic energy of the molecules increases with a rise in temperature. So the enzyme shows increased activity up to a certain temperature.

Enzyme shows increased activity up to a certain temperature.

    Explanation:

Enzymes are organic catalysts which are protein in nature hence they are sensitive to changes in temperature. They work best only within a narrow range of temperature between 35-40°c. As the temperature increases, the optimum temperature is reached. Above the optimum temperature, the rate of reaction decreases sharply because higher temperatures denatures enzymes thus inactivating them.
