This statement is incorrect. Chlorophyll is a light absorbing pigment and is present in plants, irrespective of whether they grow in light or dark. Chlorophyll absorbs all other colors of white light except green, causing plants to appear green. Even when plants are kept in dark, chlorophyll is present, but it cannot absorb any light since no light is present. Therefore, the plant appears white. Objects appear the color which their surfaces are able to reflect and for them to appear of any color, they need to reflect the color off their surfaces, which can only happen if light is incident upon the objects.
