The correct layer is " there is an additional third oblique layer of smooth muscle".

The muscularis externa of the stomach is purely smooth muscle (no skeletal muscles or other striated muscles) composed of three layers; inner oblique, middle circular, and external longitudinal layers. Plicae circularis can only be found in the intestines, not in the stomach.
