How is gene therapy fundamentally different from treating disease using traditional medicine?

Gene therapy is defined as the treatment of a disease by transfer of engineered genetic material into the cells. It is a treatment that includes the insertion of healthy genes in the human cells or the inactivation of a mutated non-functioning gene. It is a groundbreaking area of biomedicine since it is tested as a possible therapy for diseases that are rare and very serious or diseases that have no other cure. On the contrary, traditional medicine uses drugs or surgery to treat most of the diseases. In many cases of treating a disease using traditional medicine, efforts are focused on treating the symptoms, without a possibility of eradicating the disease.
