The components of gastric juices are produced by the gastric glands found in small cavities of the gastric mucosa. The gastric glands are elongated and consist of several types of cells: superficial cells, main cells and parietal cells. Superficial cells produce mucus that protects the stomach from attack by digestive acids and enzymes.
