The process by which malignant tumors that are not enclosed in a protective capsule spread to other organs and invade surrounding tissues is called the metastasis.

Cancer is a result of uncontrolled cell division and proliferation of cells leading to the formation of tumors. Tumors are of two types namely

    (1) the benign tumor which is normally non-cancerous and enclosed in a capsule and does not spread to other parts of the body.

    (2) the malignant tumors which are cancerous and being non-capsulated they can invade the other parts of the body.

Metastasis is a complex process in which the cells from the primary uncapsulated, malignant tumors spreads to the different parts of the body through the blood stream, lymphatic system. They can also spread to healthy tissues through direct invasion by producing claw like protrusions that invade the surrounding tissue, cause mutation and create mutant cells by disturbing thr RNA and the DNA of the normal cells.

Thus, metastasis refers to the invasion of malignant tumors and spreading to different parts of the body by producing claw like protrusions.
