    Carbon atom's atomic number is 6 because it has 6 electrons. So two electrons are present in the innermost shell and 4 electrons are present in the outermost shell. Therefore carbon needs 4 electron to complete its octet.

    As the valency of carbon atom is four it can accept only four electrons from other atoms. Because giving four-electron or taking four electrons is very difficult therefore it usually obtains electrons by sharing. So it makes covalent bonds with other atoms.

    So carbon atom can only form 4 bonds because of its valency, therefore, the correct answer is b. Carbon can only bond with up to four other atoms.
