John, age 25, is a full-time student at a state university. John lives with his unmarried sister, Ann, who provides over half of his support. His only income is $4,300 of wages from a part-time job at the college book store. What is Ann's filing status for 2019?

    Explanation:

    Ann provided over half of John's support and therefore normally she can claim him as a dependent on her tax return which would make her a Head of Household. However, for him to be claimed as a dependent on 2019, his income would have to be less than $4,150. John's income in this scenario is $4,300 which is higher than the limit. Ann therefore cannot claim John on her tax return and because she is unmarried, she will have to file as a Single person.
