    garage cost = $ 12

    Explanation:

    given,

    garage charge for first hour = $ 4.00

    and for every additional hour = $ 3.50

    customer pays = $ 30

    garage charges = ?

    time for which car was parked = 5 hrs

    total charge = garage cost + first hour charge + 4 hour charge

    $ 30 = garage cost + $ 4.00 + $ 3.50 * 4

    garage cost = $ 30 - $ 18

    garage cost = $ 12

    hence, the garage cost comes out to be $ 12
