It was an early attempt to explain stratification in society, it stated that social stratification is necessary to promote efficiency, productivity and excellence, it gives people something to strive for.

The sociologists Wilbert Moore and and Kingsley Davis published it in 1945 and argued that the importance of a social role decides its award, they said that the most difficult jobs in the society are necessary ones and they require highest compensation to motivate individuals to do those jobs.
