Your maximum seating capacity as ordered by the fire marshal is 400. You have one room with 97 seats, another with 83, another with 179, and finally one with 57. If every seat in your restaurant is taken are you in compliance with the law?

    No, you would not be in compliance because you have 16 more seats than the fire marshal allows.

    97+83+179+57 = 416

    Note: You are allowed to have more seats than capacity they just can't all be full. So if your capacity is 20 and you have 6 tables of 5 for a total of 30 seats, but there are only 3 people at each table for a total of 18 people your are fine. Basically, it is not the number of chairs but the number of people in those chairs.
