    If the U. S. dollar appreciates relative to the British pound, then the pound will depreciate relative to the U. S. dollar. Appreciating means to rise in value, price. Whereas depreciate is to decline in value, price. If the dollar rises relative to the pound then the pound is going down to meet the dollar value. Though currencies most often just change slightly, they can appreciate or depreciate often.
