Since the value of money (coins) wasn't set by its denomination, instead by its weight and their composition (e. g. gold, silver), the Spanish peso or dollar were widely used in the American colonies, in some places even more than British coins.

Then after the revolutionary war, Congress created the US dollar in 1792. The US dollar gained importance in world trade as time went by and currently it is the most important international currency in the world.
