    Explanation:

    A lot of people believe that multinational corporations are so powerful now that they can control governments, and not only governments from small poor nations, but the US government itself. This is a major belief in all the conspiracy theories about who rules the world. But the fact that many people believe in it doesn't make it true, or hopefully is not true.

    Although some actions taken by the government specially in certain industries like the oil industry are a clear indication that maybe multinationals don't own the government completely but they are least able to rent the government for a while. When wars are fought in order to favor certain companies, like both invasions on Iraq, then this idea gains momentum.
