In reference to search utilities, what does an index do?

So basically, you'll go to the back of usually your fat textbooks and you see millions of words in alphabetical order, so it's easier to find. And the numbers next to it tell you were you can find a description of that word when your looking through that book. Btw, indexes are usually in nonfiction FYI.
