John is twice as old as Paul. Two years ago he was three times as old as Paul. How old is each boy?

    John: 8yrs old

    Paul: 4yrs old

    Explanation:

    if John is 8 and Paul is 4 then 2 yrs ago they would be 6 yrs old and 2yrs old respectively.

    currently Paul is x

    John is 2x

    2yrs ago Paul is x-2

    john is 2x-2

    so

    3 (x-2) = 2x-2

    3x-6=2x-2

    3x-2x=-2+6

    x=4
