The US should take a very limited role in involving itself in world affairs. It's choice to engage militarily or economically in order to shape the policy of other sovereign nations should be guided by the consensus of the world community, the wishes of the applicable country, and by the guarantee of excellence in all its dealings should it choose to engage. Partnerships with other international organizations isn't an absolute necessity but would seem prudent to guarantee effectiveness.
