Internet advertising is advertising that appears on the Internet for marketing purposes.

The Internet began as a non-commercial medium, funded by the institutions that considered themselves to benefit from connecting to the network. Advertising uses the common infrastructure and is only paid to a portion of the beneficiary; Advertising is rarely accepted to a greater extent in traditional Internet forums, such as usenet and email. In the former, there are specific "hierarchies" and "groups" where advertising and private advertisements are accepted, in the latter, generally, advertising mailing is rejected unless the recipient has given his permission. The fight against unwanted advertising has been fierce and in many countries there is legislation against certain types of advertising.

The situation changed when the world wide web was invented and commercial operators began to offer internet connection to private individuals. As a result of strong competition, the prices of Internet connections were kept low and the need for different types of financing became great. The operators tried to entice the new users to use the Internet through the operator's web portal, so that the connections could be financed through advertising space there. The new users, many with insignificant knowledge of the nature of the Internet, were not as critical of advertising, but viewed it as a natural part of the medium.

Nowadays, several valuable services on the Internet are financed with advertising revenue. The attitude towards advertising varies widely between different users and depending on the design of the advertising. Discreet and clearly separated advertising links on web pages should be accepted by most. However, advertising that interferes with internet use is often perceived as unpleasant and is combated partly by avoiding visiting and linking to pages containing such advertisements and partly by allowing web browsers or intermediate servers to filter out such content.
