For losing or gaining weight, calories play an important role. If amount of calories you consume is more than you burn then you gain weight and if you eat less calories than you burn then you lose weight. 3,500 calories is equal to one pound of fat and to lose one pound of fat you would have to burn 3500 calories. So he would have to cut about 500 to 1000 calories as day form his diet to lose about 1 to 2 pounds of fat a week. For losing five pound of fat he would have to burn 17,500 calories in total to lose five pounds of fat. He can choose one month period and can attempt to lose one pound per week by having a calorie deficit diet and exercising.
