The following is a report from a not-very-efficient BLS survey taker: "There were 65 people in the houses I visited. 10 of them were children under the age of 16, 25 people had full-time jobs, and 5 had part-time jobs. There were 10 retirees, 5 full-time homemakers, 5 full-time students over age 16, and 2 people who were disabled and cannot work. The remaining people did not have jobs, but all said they would like one. One of these people had not looked actively for work for three months, however." Find the labor force, the working-age population, the number of employed workers, and the number of unemployed workers.

    The labor force is 32.

The working age population is 55.

The number of employed people is 30.

The number of unemployed people is 2.

    Explanation:

    The total population is 65.

The number of full time workers is 25.

The number of part time workers is 5.

The number of discouraged workers is 1.

    The working age population is

    = Total population - children below 16

    = 65 - 10

    = 55

The number of employed people is

    = Full-time workers + Part-time workers

    = 25 + 5

    = 30

    The number of unemployed people

    = 65 - (25+5+1+10+10+5+5+2)

    = 2

    The labor force is

    = Unemployed + employed

    = 30 + 2

    = 32
