When landlords wrongfully withhold security deposits, they can often be sued for three times the amount of the security deposit. Is this reasonable? Should a landlord have to pay $3000 for a $1000 debt? What if you fail to pay a rent on time? Should you have to pay three times the amount of your normal rent?
