Coins are more desirable because they are a hard currency. Meaning they hold their value or increase depending on the metal they are made of. Paper money is just that ... paper. Also it is flammable. Ever hear the phrase money to burn, it truly has a double meaning. Many investors turn their paper money or cash in bank account into gold and silver bars. These metals not only maintain their worth but can increase depending on the daily value. Also if your bank fails having cold hard currency doesn't mean you just lost all your money as well.
