A chemical reaction produces CO2 (g). If 44 g is produced at 1.0 atm and 25°C, what volume will the gas occupy? (Assume that CO2 behaves as an ideal gas under these conditions.

    Answer: The gas volume is 24.5L

    Explanation:

    Using ideal gas equation which is the general equation for ideal gases.

    PV = nRT

    Where

    P = pressure = 1.0atm

    V = volume = ?

    n = mole = mass/molar mass

    Mass given = 44g

    Molar mass of CO2 = (1*12 + 2*16)

    = 44g/mol

    n=44/44 = 1mol.

    R = ideal gas constant = 0.08206atmL/molK

    T = temperature = 25 + 273 = 298K

    Which implies

    1 * V = 1 * 0.08206 * 298

    V=24.45L

    Therefore the volume occupied by the gas is 24.45L
