You can readily observe that polarized lenses are those that initially looks transparent when not exposed to direct sunlight. But when they are, they change color and look like tinted glasses. This is because a chemical reaction has occurred. Polarized glasses work by adding a chemical film on the lenses which absorbs horizontal light, while allowing the vertical light to pass through. The glare of sunlight is induced when light strikes a flat surface and is reflected off in different directions. It is the horizontal light that factors in the glare. Polarized lenses are different from tinted sunglasses in a sense that tinted glasses only reduce the glare. It still passes through but does not completely eliminate it.
