    Next logical step would be to assess the number of each atom that is on both sides of the equation. It is only then that you can truly tell what stoichiometric value would be needed to balance these species.

    LHS of eq: 1 C RHS of eq: 1 C (equal on both sides)

    2 S 2 S (equal on both sides)

    2 Cl 6 Cl (unequal)

    ∴ the only atom that needs to be balanced is Cl and that can be done by putting a 3 infront of the diatom of chlorine as can be seen below on the LHS of the equation.

    CS₂ + Cl₂ → CCl₄ + S₂Cl₂ [unbalanced equation]

    CS₂ + 3 Cl₂ → CCl₄ + S₂Cl₂ [balanced equation]

    Now you have the same amount of Chlorine atoms on both sides of the equation LHS (3 * 2 = 6) and RHS (4 + 2 = 6)
