A solution requires that two chemicals each in a separate container with a solvent are then mixed. There usually is a chemical reaction that has taken place.

A mechanical mixture is one in which particles are suspended in a solvent. No chemical exchange has taken place.

Sugar in water is a very common example of a mixture. If you look up the Tyndall effect, you will find out how light behaves when it is shone through a mixture. In a solution the light leaves no trace of how it passes through a solution.

When light passes through a mixture it leaves traces of how it passes through the mixture. It is cone shaped.
