Positively charged ions and negatively charged to create an electrostatic attraction that results in the formation of an ionic compound. An Ionic compound dissociates when dissolved in water to form free ions that can transfer electric charges. For example, KCl is an ionic compound that dissociates in water to generate two free ions, K⁺ and Cl⁻ ions. That is; KCl → K⁺ (aq) + Cl⁻ (aq)
