But in large quantities, they can cause a major water pollution problem. Too many nutrients stimulate the rapid growth of plants and algae, clogging waterways and sometimes creating blooms of toxic blue-green algae. This process is called eutrophication.

Eutrophication is when the environment becomes enriched with nutrients. This can be a problem in marine habitats such as lakes as it can cause algal blooms ... Some algae even produce toxins that are harmful to higher forms of life.
