Gemetes (also reproductive / sex cells such as eggs and sperms) are haploid sex cells (having half number of chromosomes as compared to their parent cell).

They are produced in sexually reproducing organisms by a process of cell division called meiosis.

It is reductional cell division because a diploid parent cell produces four haploid daughter cells (gametes) that contain half the number of chromosomes to their parent cell.
