    Therefore, X belongs to group 2

    Part (b):

    For the compound MgX, X must be non-metal. As magnesium is divalent and there is one magnesium atom, so the valency of X must be two.

    Therefore, X belongs to group 16

    Part (c):

    For the compound X₂SO₄, X must be a hydrogen or metal. As sulfate is divalent and there is two X atoms, so the valency of X must be one.

    Therefore, X belongs to group 1
