    When metals react with nonmetals, an ionic compound generally results. The predicted general formula would be MX where M is the metal atom and X is the nonmetal atom. Ionic bonds can be formed from the bonding of a metal cation and a nonmetal anion. Non-metals are characterized by having high electronegativities while metals have lower electronegativities. This would lead for nonmetals to be much "stronger" than metals resulting for the nometals to get electrons from the metals easily. These two ions have opposite charges which makes them attract each other and forming an ionic bond. Examples are NaCl, NaBr, FeCl3, and the like.
