What is being oxidized?

    An example of something oxidizing is iron turning into iron oxide, or rust. This reaction is very slow, but you know something has iron in it if it rusts. Also, bonus fact, you won't get tetanus if you touch a rusty nail. The rust has to enter the bloodstream for that to happen.
