You haven't provided the experiment or the reaction equation but for any given experiment there is a standard way of calculating the number of moles,

Simply we use the formula Number of moles = mass / molar mass

We just have to make sure that the units are in the same value system.

    Given:

Molar mass of methane is 16.04 g/mol

    Required:

Number of moles burned in the experiment

    Solution:

The data is lacking, however if you are given a mass of methane sample, say for example 50g of methane then,

    Number of moles = mass / molar mass = 50g/16.04 g/mol = 3.117mol
