Explain clearly what is meant by the statement "The atomic mass of gold is 197.0 amu."

    amu is atomic mass unit. 1 amu indicates (1/12) th of mass of a carbon-12 atom.

    Also, 1 amu is equal to average of rest mass of a proton and a neutron. Roughly, it has been estimated that amu indicated number of nucleons (proton+neutron) in an atom.

    So, 1 amu means there is 1 nucleon.

    So, 197.0 amu means there are 197 number of nucleons in gold.

    Again, it has to be remembered that 1 amu = 1 g/mol
