Dipeptide is formed when two amino acids are joined together by a chemical bond called peptide bond. R group or "variable group" represents the side chain on the amino acid and this distinguishes the variety of a certain amino acid among others. For example, in the glycine-valine dipeptide, glycine has hydrogen as side chain while valine has isopropyl as side chain.
