Sunlight consists of a continuous distribution of all wavelengths of light in the visible region. Passing this light through a prism refracts each wave at different angles causing separation of the incident light into different color bands (rainbow). When atoms are energetically excited, they emit light. Passing the light emitted from the atom through a narrow slit and refracting the beam through a prism reveals what (compared to sunlight) ?

    It will reveal discrete lines which correspond to different wavelengths emitted by an atom, the lines show different colors, this discrete lines of colors is known as line spectrum

    Explanation: Line spectrum is the discrete lines observed when an energetically charged and excited atom with light is passed though a narrow slit and refracted using a prism. This can be observed for atoms, Hydrogen will have a different line spectrum from Helium.

    Continuous spectrum is the continuous lines observed when white light is passed through a slit and a prism, it will separate the light into different wavelengths representing different colors bands.
