What is hybridization of electron orbitals? Hybridization of electron orbitals occurs when several atomic orbitals (such as s and p orbitals) of an atom combine to form (the same number of) new, hybrid orbitals. A promotion energy has to be involved in order for this event to occur.

    These new orbitals formed are suitable for electron pairing. Hybrid orbitals are primarily used in explaining how electrons behave within molecules.

    Popular example of hybrid orbitals are the sp, sp^2 and the sp^3 orbitals found in the alkane, alkenes and alkynes respectively.

    To indicate the principle of hybridization, for example in the sp hybrid orbital, one s shell mixed with one p shell to form a new hybrid orbital called the sp orbital
