Michael faraday reported that passing electricity through one solution liberated mass of hydrogen at the cathode and masses of oxygen at the anode. the same quantity of electricity liberated masses of chlorine at the anode and masses of tin at the cathode from a second solution. what were the oxidation states of hydrogen, oxygen, chlorine, and tin in these solutions?

    Answer is: on anode anions lost electrons and became neutral, on cathode cations gain electrons and became neutral. Hydrogen has oxidation state + 1 (cation), oxygen has - 2 (anion), chlorine has - 1 (anion) and tin has + 2 (cation).

    Electrolysis is decomposition of a substance by an electric current.
