A 200 of gas is contained in a vessel under a pressure of 850 mmHg. What would be the new volume of the gas if the pressure is change to 1000mmHg? Assume that the temperature remains constant.

    Initial volume of gas V1 = 200 (liters, ml, dm3 or cm3)

    Initial pressure of gas = 850 mmHg

    New volume of gas V2 = ?

    New pressure of gas P2 = 1000mmHg

    Since pressure and volume are involved while temperature is constant, apply the formula for Boyle's law

    P1V1 = P2V2

    850 mmHg x 200 = 1000 mmHg x V2

    170000 = 1000V2

    Divide both sides by 1000

    170000/1000 = 1000V2/1000

    170 = V2

    Thus, the new volume of the gas is 170 (liters, ml, dm3 or cm3)
