For the following questions, name the ionic compound using a periodic table and the polyatomic ion chart. Be sure to use correct spelling. Capitalize the first letter of each word. Be sure to check if it's binary, ternary, and if it has a transition metal before you go to name it.

NaF

Mg (NO3) 2

Ca3 (PO4) 2

Na2O

PbI2 (third letter is capital i)

Cu (SO4)

K (ClO3)

Li (C2H3O2)

ZnO

    NaF = Sodium Flouride

    Mg (NO3) 2 = Magnesium Nitrate

    Ca3 (PO4) 2 = Calcium Phosphate

    Na2O = Sodium Oxide

    PbI2 = Lead Iodide

    Cu (SO4) = Copper Sulphate

    K (ClO3) = Potassium Chlorate

    Li (C2H3O2) = Lithium Acetate

    ZnO = Zinc Oxide

    NH4I = Ammonium Iodide

    The key to knowing all of these is to identify the groups that make specific compounds, e. g. NH4 is ammonia, SO4 is a sulphate and C2H3O2 is an acetate. To know when to use the suffix - ide or - ate is based on the presence of oxygen; if there is oxygen in the compound its name will end with - ate and if not, it will end with - ide (discluding oxides).
