An 80-kg patient has the flu and his temperature increases from 37°C to 39°C: c = 3 470 J / (kgK). How much extra heat do the chemical reactions in his cells have to generate to cause this temperature change? (6 x 105 J)

    Explanation:

    Q = mcΔT

    ∴ mass (m) = 80 kg

    ∴ c = 3470 J/Kg. K

    ∴ T1 = 37°C ≅ 310 K

    ∴ T2 = 39°C ≅ 312 K

    ⇒ ΔT = T2 - T1 = 312 K - 310 K = 2 K

    ⇒ Q = (80 Kg) * (3470 J/Kg. K) * (2 K)

    ⇒ Q = 555200 J ≅ 600000 J ≅ 6 E5 J
