Butanol isn't a hydrocarbon because it contains oxygen and for it to be a hydrocarbon it needs only to have the components of hydrogen and carbon.

Butanol isn't a hydrocarbon because a hydrocarbon is a compound composed only of carbon and hydroge. Butanol, or C4H10O, is a compound oc carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
