Think of a glass of warm water and a spoonful of salt. Once the salt is mixed into the warm water it will dissolve and become a homogeneous solution. If the glass of water is then put into a pot on the stove the water can be boiled away (in the form of steam) and a visible layer of salt will remain in the pot.
