Bronze is an alloy. What is an alloy and why are they preferable at times?

    Alloys are mixtures of metals and other elements, which still keeps many characteristics of metal.

    Alloys are sometimes desirable as they have some properties that the original metals don't, for example more flexibility or less fragility. Steel is such an alloy: it prevents movement of iron parts, making it stronger.
