Dissolving is the process of mixing solid components with a liquid solvent. This is done because solids rarely react with each other because their atoms are compactly arranged. If you dissolve them in a solid, interactions would require to break the compact arrangement into pieces which increases the surface area. With this increased surface area, there would be more sites of reaction. In other words, the liquid solvent is just a medium to react the solid components.
