A sealed container holding 0.0255 L 0.0255 L of an ideal gas at 0.979 atm 0.979 atm and 65 ∘ C 65 ∘C is placed into a refrigerator and cooled to 37 ∘ C 37 ∘C with no change in volume. Calculate the final pressure of the gas.

    Explanation:

    In order to determine the final pressure of the gas, we use the Ideal Gases Law for both situations:

    Initial situation is → P₁. V₁ = n. R. T₁

    Second situation is P₂. V₂ = n. R. T₂

    P₁ / T₁ = P₂ / T₂ as R is a constant, and the n and V stay the same

    We convert the temperature to absolute values:

    65°C + 273 = 338 K

    37°C + 273 = 310 K

    0.979 atm / 338 K = P₂ / 310K

    (0.979 atm / 338 K). 310K = P₂ → 0.897 atm

    As temperature decreased, the pressure decreased too when the volume of the gas remains constant.
