What distinguishes an atom of one element from an atom of another element?

    How do the isotopes of a given element differ from one another? Since the isotopes of any given element all contain the same number of protons, they have the same atomic number. However, since the isotopes of a given element contain different numbers of neutrons, different isotopes have different mass numbers
