When a hot tungsten is surrounded by air, it will react with the oxygen in air forming tunsten oxide and fall into pieces. It combines with oxygen to form a yellow tungsten oxide. Also, it can react with nitrogen nitrides. The balanced reaction with oxygen is:

    W + 3/2 O2 - - - >WO3
