Fish can excrete their body's waste very easily. Ammonia wastes normally diffuse out into the water through their gills ... The ammonia is converted to nitrite and then converted into nitrate. Once the ammonia released by the fish is converted by bacteria into nitrate, it is relatively non-toxic to the fish.
